Hey friends! I am working on my action research plan and I am not quite sure if I am doing this right!! For all of you EDLD 5301ers out there, help me out...give me some feedback. I will be looking and posting on as many blogs as I can throughout the week. I think I am going to set a goal to comment on at least 5 or 10 a day! Hope you're enjoying your Spring Break.. I better get back to my laundry.

IStation scores
STAAR Results
Reading Curriculum Based Assessment scores for grades 2-5
Fluency wpm tables grades 1-2
|
Students were selected base on three factors - Istation
scores in vocabulary category, Grades 4-5 STAAR Results and Reading CBA's
results. Other factors taken into consideration were fluency scores for
students in grades 1 & 2 along with students overall comprehension
capability which directly correlates to vocabulary development. Due to our
failure to meet AYP within a sub-population that group was also targeted due
their lack of vocabulary development. Teachers were then allowed to select
students within parameters set according to our needs as mentioned above.

Using Istation and Imagine Learning reports, I will compare the
vocabulary scores and usage reports to see if there is a correlation between
usage of IL and growth in Istation vocabulary scores.

Very nicely done and well thought out. You questioned if you are doing it right...I hope so because mine is similar. I am not familiar with Istation, but I like your idea.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alise! Istation is a reading program that we use on our computers that has great progress monitoring in letter knowledge, phonemic awareness, alphabetic decoding, comprehension, vocabulary and spelling
DeleteYour plan is very thorough! I am anticipating the results of your findings. I use I-Station on my campus but I never once thought of doing my action research on it. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your research plan! We are just now getting starting using iStation. I look forward to seeing your findings through this whole process!
ReplyDeleteEverything looks great! I know that your research will definitely yield some valuable information. I look forward to learning about Imagine Learning. I haven't heard about it before, but I do know how important vocabulary is at the moment, especially with the increased rigor of the STAAR/EOC tests. Based on test information, the LEP and SPED populations really struggled with the vocabulary on those tests. I hope all goes well with your research!
ReplyDeleteOur campus uses Istation with all of our kinder through second grade students. One of the things teachers have difficulty with is finding time to get all students on the computer. Time is always an issue! I am wondering when you plan on using Imagine Learning? I would assume that since it is an intervention, it would be used in the daily lesson cycle, but maybe during supplemental time, or during tutoring? Also, which part of the program are you using, Struggling Readers? I have just seen the demo, so I don't know a whole lot about it, but does it speak directly to improving vocabulary, or that a by product of using the program? As you can tell, I have many questions and I am very intrigued. I look forward to reading more about your research program!
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to find time to get everything done on the computers everyday, but all students k-5 do I station in the computer lab three to four days a week for twenty to thirty minutes. I'm not too sure which part of the program we are using but I know that it teaches our kiddos letters/letter knowledge, phonemic awareness, phonics, alphabetic decoding, comprehension skills, vocabulary and spelling. It also generates reports showing the student gains or areas of concern for each reading component. It is pretty thorough. As far as implementing Imagine Learning, we are starting vocabulary club in the mornings before school where the students come from 7:30-7:50 for grades 2-5. Kinder and first grade are required to implement this into their morning reading time in their classrooms (as each teacher has 4-5 computers). I hope this helps to answer your questions and thanks for your interest in my project!!
DeleteKatey,
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I think you will be a hero in your school if you are starting off with a 95% dissastisfaction rate among the teachers with what you all were doing. LOL. Look forward to following the progress and watching the students' vocabulary soar.
